James M. Hill, Sr.
A remarkable story of making the best
of life's struggles and opportunities
James M. Hill, Sr. lives near Rutherfordton, North Carolina, in a house that his grandfather built around 1890 for James's great-grandfather, Barney Hill. James has lived there almost continuously for the past seventy years.
Recently he added on a spacious sunroom to better watch dozens of birds that come to his six bird feeders and the occasional deer cross his creek and front lawn.
At age 97, he lives with his daughter Helen. His favorite pastimes are visiting friends and relatives and puttering around his home and yard. He says, "Most Sundays we have company in to eat with us. We try to invite those that don't have any mate. With my new sunroom, we can easily seat a dozen people around the table. Sitting around eating and talking, now that is living!"
On many summer and fall afternoons, you're likely to find him out around his two-acre yard on his riding mower and with his cell phone clipped to his shirt pocket.
He enjoys receiving cards and notes from readers sharing their experiences or reactions to his life story.
